Senate
The Senate is the supreme academic body of the University. Among
the decisions taken by this body during the report period, two
deserve special mention.
With Senate’s support, the current arrangements for coordinating
undergraduate education have been reorganized to meet the
challenges arising from the transition of the current three-year
program to a four-year program in 2012. Under the new set up,
three offices, namely the Office of the Vice-President for Academic
Affairs/Deputy to the President (VPAA), the Student Affairs Office,
and a new Dean of Undergraduate Education Office, will share the
responsibility for central management of undergraduate education.
The VPAA’s Office will continue to take an overview of planning and
policy issues. The Director of Student Affairs, now reporting to the
VPAA, will be responsible for coordinating all undergraduate and
postgraduate programs for campus and residential life.
The new Dean of Undergraduate Education, also reporting to the
VPAA, will coordinate student recruitment, orientation and the
transition to university studies, cross-School academic matters
including competency education and general education, coordination
with Schools to develop enrichment programs, the co-curriculum
(e.g. language training) and interdisciplinary programs, maintaining
and updating student portfolios, mentoring, career counseling and
placement.
With generous support of members of the University community,
the Senate has found it possible to endorse an increase in the
University’s scholarship offers. Students receiving the highest
scholarship award may now enjoy full subsidy, including tuition fees
and living allowances totaling HK$100,000 a year. These scholarship
schemes are intended to attract outstanding students, including
those admitted through the Joint University Programmes Admissions
System (JUPAS), Early Admission Scheme (EAS) and Direct Entry.
Scholarship offers are further extended to students who actively serve
the community or demonstrate special non-academic talents. Such
scholarships will help them fully develop their potential.
