Using HKUST's global achievements and
foundation of excellence as a spring-
board, the Strategic Plan 2005-2020 pro-
vides a comprehensive framework for
the development of the University over
the next 15 years.
Building on the University's established
strengths, key initiatives outlined in the
Strategic Plan cover research, faculty
recruitment, campus development and
the exciting transformation of undergrad-
uate education to ensure the provision of
programs that equip students with the
appropriate skills and knowledge to play
leading roles in a fast-moving world.
Five
high-impact areas
have been iden-
tified in which HKUST will seek to forge
the way internationally and achieve
global influence. All are of scientific sig-
nificance and, in keeping with HKUST's
mission, have great potential to add
value to the social and economic devel-
opment of Hong Kong, the Pearl River
Delta, and beyond. They are:
Such academic achievement will be
reinforced by the establishment of the
Institute for Advanced Study at HKUST
.
This new institute will become home to
international and local 'star' scholars
who, together with public and private
sector partners, will develop the Institute
into a global research leader and further
highlight Hong Kong's role as an educa-
tion and research hub. These top aca-
demics will serve as inspiring role models
and mentors for students, and help to
demonstrate scholarship's role in driving
progress.
A
School of Innovation and Technology
Management
is envisaged. The School
will build on the success of HKUST's inno-
vative dual-degree programs in technol-
ogy and management. Custom-made
curricula will be developed, breaking
down conventional academic barriers
and melding the strengths of HKUST's
Science, Engineering and Business
Schools. Its undergraduate and post-
graduate programs will address the
growing need worldwide for employees
who can bridge disciplines.
