neers and researchers.

announced the
establishment of a
HK$29.2 million
Information
Technology Institute,
which is set to
raise Hong Kong's
regional profile as an IT
research hub and
boost commercializa-

by WebEx and the ITF
and is the largest proj-
ect award yet under
the ITF University-
Industry Collaboration
Programme.
Latest Moves
HKUST will co-host the
R&D Center for
Logistics and Supply
Chain Management
Enabling Technologies
under the ITF, together
with two local universi-
ties. The Center will
initially focus on
Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID),
infrastructures and
decision support tech-
nologies to help com-
panies in Hong Kong
and the Mainland
to build their
competitive edge.
Cleaning Up
Prof Howard Huang,
Department of Civil
Engineering, has
developed a hybrid
biological reactor for
waste treatment. The
new technology can
significantly increase
the treatment capaci-
ty and reduce treat-
ment costs. The gov-
ernment's Drainage
Services Department
has chosen this
technology to build
a full-scale plant on
Lantau.
Colorful Display
Prof Hoi Sing Kwok,
Department of
Electrical and
Electronic Engineering,
has created a novel
color Liquid Crystal
Display using the con-
ventional TN fabrica-
tion process.
Advantages are
vivid colors, no color
filters, simple process-
ing and low cost. It
can be used in
watches, calculators,
game machines,
among other devices,
and the technology
has now been
transferred to a local
LCD manufacturing
company for mass
production.
