• HKUST held its 21st Congregation, conferring
honorary doctorates on six distinguished academics
and leaders. Dr Jack Ma Yun, Chairman of Alibaba
Group, became HKUST’s first Commencement
Speaker.
• A naming ceremony took place for the HKUST
Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study together
with the inauguration of HKUST Jockey Club IAS
Named Professorships.
• The Li Ka Shing Foundation donated HK$20 million
to HKUST to broaden students’ global vision and
nurture innovative future leaders.
• An opening ceremony was held for the Hong Kong
Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce Ko Pui Shuen
Gallery, which houses valuable ancient maps and
classical science and technology-related rare books.
• HKUST ranked 18th in the world and No.1 in
Greater China in the Global Employability University
Ranking 2013.
• Dr Allan Zeman, “Father of Lan Kwai Fong”, spoke
on entrepreneurship at the UC RUSAL President’s
Forum.
• The Division of Environment co-organized the
Fif th Conference on East Asia and Western
Pacific Meteorology and Climate cum Hong Kong
Meteorological Society 25th Anniversary, with
the Chinese American Oceanic and Atmospheric
Association, Hong Kong Meteorological Society,
Hong Kong Observatory, the Chinese University of
Hong Kong, and World Green Organization.

• HKUST Business School invited Mr Michael Wu,
Chairman and Managing Director of Maxim’s
Group, to speak at the bi-annual Global Leadership
Forum and share his leadership challenges in
running a chain of restaurants and outlets in Hong
Kong and Mainland China.
• The School of Engineering organized Microsoft
Research Asia (MSRA) Hong Kong Day to mark
the 10th anniversary of the Ministry of Education
HKUST-MSRA Key Lab.
• HKUST held a naming ceremony for the Lo Ka
Chung Building, home of the HKUST Jockey Club
Institute for Advanced Study.
• HKUST partnered with the UNESCO-IHE Institute
for Water Education in a project using HKUST-
developed sewage treatment technologies to tackle
water scarcity in Cuba.
• HKUST held the 12th Conference of the 2013 Asian
Crystallographic Association (AsCA’13), hosted by
Prof Ian D Williams, Department of Chemistry.
• HKUST formed a partnership with Smith College to
develop women’s leadership in Asia’s public service
sector.
• HKUST Business School held its first homecoming
day for alumni.
