ur fundamental mission of academic and research
collaborations with universities and institutions
in Mainland China is crucial to our long-term strategic
development.
Nansha Developments
In Nansha, Guangzhou, a milestone was set at the
HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School as construction
of the school building commenced in June 2010. The
School has hitherto been operating in premises rented
from the Nansha IT Park.
To date, the School has secured 50 research projects,
including State 863 and 973 projects, National Natural
Science Foundation projects, as well as industrial and
institutional cooperative projects. It has also secured
research funding from Guangdong Province, Guangzhou
Municipality, the Nansha Government, and Guangdong-
Hong Kong cooperative ventures. The School has been
awarded the title of State Scientific Cooperation Base by
the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
The HKUST Shenzhen IER Building
The construction of the HKUST Shenzhen Industry,
Education and Research (IER) Building, which started
in December 2008, has been completed. The Building,
located in the Shenzhen Virtual University National
University Science and Technology Park, will house some
of our R&D and incubation activities related to our high-
impact areas of research. The state-of-the-art Building,
which is a key milestone of the University’s development
in the area, will provide ample space and facilities for
scientific research, R&D projects, technology transfer
projects, as well as executive training programs.
State Key Laboratory of
Molecular Neuroscience
The Ministry of Science and Technology of China has
approved the establishment of the State Key Laboratory
of Molecular Neuroscience at HKUST, a move which
is expected to help the University build on its existing
foundation of excellence in molecular neuroscience.
This signifies the Central Government’s recognition of
HKUST’s academic excellence in neuroscience research.
Collaboration with the South
University of Science and
Technology of China
A framework agreement was signed in December 2009
with the South University of Science and Technology of
China (SUST), under which HKUST will render advice and
assistance in the setting up of SUST. SUST will provide
venues, facilities and resources for future joint research
between HKUST and SUST. The two universities will
engage in long-term collaborations.
Mainland Exchanges
At the undergraduate level, HKUST has exchange
agreements with 11 major universities in Mainland China
which include Peking University, Tsinghua University, Jiao
Tong University and Fudan University, amongst others. In
2009, 53 HKUST students spent a semester at one of our
Mainland partner universities. We have continued apace
with the recruitment of students from the Mainland and
overseas. In 2009-10, 13% of intake came from outside
of Hong Kong.
An agreement on student exchange collaboration
with Sichuan University was reached by the School of
Science in January 2010. The first study tour by HKUST
Science students took place from late May to early June
2010, enabling our students to learn about the cultural,
historical and social aspects of Sichuan and vice versa.
Dr Li Ning, former Olympic gymnastics gold medalist
and now Chairman of Li Ning Company — China’s
foremost producer of sportswear — was made a Fellow
of the University. On the day he was presented the
honor, Dr Li Ning delivered an inspirational speech on his
entrepreneurial experience to a packed audience.
Prof Xu Kuangdi, President of the Chinese Academy of
Engineering, gave a talk at HKUST on building a low-
carbon economy in March 2010.
Renowned artist and scholar Prof Fan Zeng and famous
writer Prof Liu Zaifu gave a talk on “Back to the Classics;
Back to Nature” at HKUST in March 2010.
HKUST played host to delegations from a number of top
Mainland universities, including Nanking University and
Sun Yat-Sen University.

南沙發展項目
位於廣州南沙的香港科技大學霍英東研究院大樓於2010年
6月動工興建，是學院發展的重要里程碑。現時該研究院
向南沙資訊科技園租用地方。
至今，該學院已取得50個科研項目，包括國家863及973
計劃、國家自然科學基金項目，以及與業界及機構的合作
項目。學院亦從廣東省廣州市南沙區政府及粵港合作經營
企業獲得科研經費，並獲國家科技部頒授國家科技合作基
地稱號。
科大深圳產學研大樓
於2008年12月動土的科大深圳生產、教學及研究（產學
研）大樓工程經已竣工。該大樓位於深圳虛擬大學園國家
大學科技園，本校在產學研大樓進行重要科研領域的研發
及培育項目。大樓設備先進，將為科學研究、研發項目、
技術轉移項目及行政人員培訓課程提供充足空間及設施，
是科大於深圳發展的重要里程碑。
分子神經科學國家重點實驗室
國家科技部已批准科大成立分子神經科學國家重點實驗
室，有助科大在現有基礎上進一步發展分子神經科學。這
彰顯國家充分肯定科大神經科學研究上的傑出學術成就。
與南方科技大學攜手合作
科大於2009年12月與南方科技大學（南方科大）簽訂框架
協議，科大將為成立南方科大提供諮詢及協助，而南方科
大則為未來雙方聯校研究提供場地、設施及資源。港科大
和南方科大會展開長期合作。
內地交流
就本科生而言，科大與中國內地11家主要大學有交流生協
議，這些主要大學包括北京大學、清華大學、交通大學、
復旦大學等等。於2009年，53名科大學生在內地的夥伴大
學修讀一個學期。科大繼續加快招收內地及海外學生的步
伐，於2009-10年，有13%的新生來自香港以外的地區。
理學院於2010年1月與四川大學簽訂學生交流合作協議。
2010年5月底至6月初舉行的四川交流團是雙方合作的首
個項目,期間理學院學生前往四川與當地學生交流學習,互
相了解對方的文化、歷史及社會背景。
前奧林匹克體操金牌選手、現擔任中國頂尖運動服裝生產
商李寧公司主席李寧博士，成為科大院士。李寧博士獲授
榮譽當日，並在科大主持精彩講座，講述創業經過，座無
虛席。
2010年3月，中國工程院院長徐匡迪教授於科大發表有關
建設低碳經濟的演講。
知名藝術家及學者范曾教授與著名作家劉再復教授於2010
年3月在科大舉辦「返回古典，返回自然」講座。
科大接待了多個來自內地頂級大學的代表團，包括南京大
學及中山大學的代表團。
