RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
O
ur research mission, drawn from the Laws of Hong
Kong by which HKUST was established, focuses
on human resource development with an emphasis on
postgraduate education. We maintain excellence across
our chosen fields of endeavor and contribute to the
economic and social development of Hong Kong.
Our strategy is to attract the best faculty and students,
to expect and reward their best performance in research,
to assist economic and social development through
knowledge transfer, and to stimulate entrepreneurship.
HKUST continues to mature as a research-intensive
university. The University has been ranked among
the top 100 universities in the world in all its fields of
intellectual endeavor for the past four years by
the
Times
Higher Education Supplement
.
Locally, the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong
Kong provides another indicator of our excellence
in research. Whereas the research capabilities and
performance of all tertiary institutions in Hong Kong
have improved, HKUST still remains at the top, retaining
the highest overall research index.
The University has helped to redefine the academic and
R&D culture of Hong Kong. It has grown from a vision
to become a force for change and a catalyst in Hong
Kong’s transition to a knowledge-based society. In
just 19 years, the University has established its position
and found recognition on the world stage of research
universities.
Scholarship, research and its development and
application are central to the mission and strategy of
HKUST. A selection of research highlights featured below
covers the spectrum from the most basic research to
commercialization and business development. It clearly
demonstrates that HKUST is building on its achievements
as a world-class research university, making an impact,
and producing regional benefits.
Research Highlights
HKUST has built on its strengths to move into a position

high-impact areas. We have spearheaded research in
Nano-Science and Nano-Technology, Biological Sciences
and Biotechnology, Electronics, Wireless and Information
Technology, Environment and Sustainable Development,
as well as Management Education and Research. Our
researchers continue to make substantial contributions
at the forefront of their disciplines, in both basic and
applied research. Here are a few examples:
Prof Che-Ting Chan, Department of Physics, has
outstanding achievements in the theory of photonic
crystals, nanomaterials and metamaterials which
belong to a new class of advanced materials
designed to have superb control of waves including
electromagnetic waves and sound waves. He and
his team have achieved breakthroughs in exploring
theories with the possibility of making materials
invisible since the materials cannot be detected
by waves. The team has also designed conceptual
devices which can create optical illusions. In addition,
he explores the physical properties of nanomaterials
such as carbon nanotubes and the interaction of
nano-sized particles with light.
Prof Kei-May Lau, Department of Electronic and
Computer Engineering, has developed compound
semiconductor materials and devices for nano-
photonic and nano-electronic applications. Under her
leadership, the Photonic Technology Center at HKUST
has invented the LED on Silicon (LEDoS) technology
which consists of high-resolution and high-brightness
individually addressable emissive elements on a
silicon-based active-matrix substrate with the use of
flip-chip technology. LEDoS display panels have many
potential applications such as micro-display in mobile
electronics, portable micro-projectors, bio-sensor
arrays and programmable lighting sources.
Prof Nancy Ip, Department of Biochemistry, has
made a ground-breaking discovery by identifying a
signaling protein that is essential for proper motor
function. Using multiple approaches, her research
team has demonstrated that mice lacking cytoskeletal
regulator ephexin1 exhibit muscle weakness,
and have severe defects in the maturation of the
neuromuscular junction. These exciting findings
provide important clues in our understanding of the
