CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT
W
ith barely two years to go before the double
cohort intake in 2012, construction work is
proceeding at a pace which will ensure that the required
facilities are ready on time.
Construction of an extension to the academic building,
which will provide 3,000 sq m of learning, study, and
catering facilities, is progressing well and is scheduled
for completion in early 2011. This will allow major space
reconfiguration and refurbishment within both the library
and amenity areas. Part of this comprises a 1,800 sq m
“Learning Commons” in the Library, the design of which
is already close to completion and extensive stakeholder
consultation is expected to follow. When completed, this
will provide a major student-oriented facility.
The University has undertaken some of the largest
and most extensive construction projects since its first
buildings were built almost 20 years ago. In December
2009, work started on the construction of the Lee Shau
Kee Business Building and the Institute for Advanced
Study. When completed in 2012, the School of Business
and Management will move its operations into purpose-
built facilities in a spectacular hill-side location, just a
short walk from the main academic building.
With the construction of a 10,000 sq m building at
the southern end of the campus, HKUST will provide
additional space for teaching and research. Design work
for the project is moving apace. The new structure,
which will provide a truly first-class learning and research
environment for staff and students, will significantly
boost the University’s cross-disciplinary research
capabilities. They include multi-disciplinary laboratories,
undergraduate teaching and research facilities, plus
a multi-purpose lecture hall with a maximum seating
capacity for 400.
On-campus residential accommodation for students
will be greatly boosted with the construction of two
350-place halls of residence. Construction is underway.
Design work has commenced for the off-campus joint-
university student residence in nearby Tseung Kwan
O, which will provide the University with a further
370 places. The Government has also supported the
construction of a joint-university hostel in Wu Kai Sha,
Ma On Shan which is expected to provide another 920
places for HKUST.
The construction of the University’s Shenzhen IER
Building has been completed in the Shenzhen Virtual
University, National University Science and Technology
Learning Commons,
Learning
Commons
Park. The construction of the main building for the
HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School in Nansha, which
has so far been operating in rented space, began in June
2010.
Campus Sustainability
Sustaining a green culture is an important priority for
HKUST. The University has practiced energy conservation
by retrofitting appliances and equipment, and optimizing
operations, yielding significant reductions in carbon
emission. Waste minimization and recycling has been
extended to include paper, plastic bottles, aluminum
cans, rechargeable batteries, toner cartridges, moon
cake boxes, CDs, books, clothing and chemical reagents.
Sustainability is a significant component in all campus
expansion projects at HKUST. All new facilities have
been designed to achieve the Gold standard under
the Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment
Method (BEAM) scheme which establishes building
performance benchmarks on emission, energy use,
waste management, water consumption and indoor
environmental quality. The University is also highly
meticulous in the selection of materials and equipment
and in the adoption of building management strategies
to optimize energy efficiency and sustainability.
HKUST ha s rece i ved nume rous awa rds f o r i t s
sustainability efforts: Model Member Award under the
Program on Source Separation of the Environmental
Protection Department; Gold Wastewise designation,
and Indoor Air Quality (Excellent Class) certificates.
In addition, coffee grounds, chopped trees and food
wastes were recycled as soil conditioners or fertilizers at
the University’s own organic farm. A joint HKUST-EPD
vehicle emission test has been demonstrated in order to
raise awareness on vehicle pollution. Environment Week
2010 was held with a demonstration of low carbon
emission cooking by former Commissioner of Police,
Mr Dick Lee and President Tony F Chan. Other activities
included a Library talk on Prof Bill Barron’s book
The
Great Disconnect
, a garage sale, a green fashion and
product show, an electric vehicle showcase, and the
green ambassador award ceremony. An Eco-Olympics
competition was held to promote energy conservation
and wa s t e mi n imi za t i on wi t h 3 , 000 s t uden t s

) was
launched and an entire floor of the UG Hall 7 Living and
Learning Community was dedicated to promoting the
concept of “Live Green!”.
