HKUST Shenzhen Institute
T
he Shenzhen Institute oversees the University’s
initiatives and developments in Shenzhen. The
University attaches great importance to the Pan-Pearl
River Delta Region and seeks to further enhance its
position in the hi-tech blueprint of Shenzhen, one of the
fastest growing cities in Southern China. Since 1999,
the University has been strengthening its collaboration
with Shenzhen in three primary areas, namely
incubation, training, and research.
The PKU-HKUST Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institution was
established under a joint venture agreement between
HKUST, Peking University and Shenzhen Municipal
Government to house applied R&D projects, incubate
technology enterprises and provide a venue for the
offering of executive training programs. The HKUST-
Shenzhen Research Institute (SRI) was set up in April
2001 to serve as HKUST’s liaison office in Shenzhen. The
SRI liaises with companies and laboratories which are
set up by, or related to, HKUST. In addition, it provides
facilities for the MBA program offered by the School of
Business and Management. The three partners further
strengthened their ties with the establishment of the
Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Center in 2001.
Wi th the suppor t of the Shenzhen Mun i c i pa l
Government, HKUST has obtained approval for building
its own industry, education and research (IER) base in the
Shenzhen Virtual University, National University Science
and Technology Park. With a constructible area of up to
15,000 sq m, the capital development of the Shenzhen
IER Building was completed in the third quarter of 2010,
marking a key milestone in the University’s development
in Shenzhen. It provides space and facilities for scientific
research, R&D projects, technology transfer projects, and
executive training programs. This IER project will allow
HKUST to make greater contributions to the economic,
research and technological development of Hong Kong
and the region.
