T
he HKUST Shenzhen Institute
oversees the University’s initiatives and developments in
Shenzhen. The University attaches great importance to the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region and seeks
to further enhance its position in the hi-tech blueprint of Shenzhen, one of the fastest growing cities in
Southern China.
HKUST’s start-up in Shenzhen dated back to August 1999 when a joint venture agreement was signed
with Peking University (PKU) and Shenzhen Municipal Government to establish the PKU-HKUST Shenzhen-
Hong Kong Institution. Since then, a number of projects, including hi-tech incubation companies, training
programs and research laboratories from HKUST and PKU have been brought to Shenzhen.
The three partners further strengthened their collaborative relationship with the establishment of the
Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Center in 2001, leveraging on the strengths of the two world renowned
universities in clinical medicine, biomedical research, education, and international networking.
A major milestone was achieved in 2006 when the University received confirmation from the Shenzhen
Municipal Government on the grant of one of the last few pieces of land in the Shenzhen Virtual University
Park for the construction of HKUST’s own industry, education and research (IER) base. The HKUST Shenzhen
IER Building, with a constructible area up to 15,000 sq.m., will enable the University’s start-up and joint-
venture companies to establish a strong foothold in Shenzhen. It will also provide much needed space for
the establishment of research laboratories for product development and training programs.
The Building is expected to be completed in late 2009. Through this IER project, HKUST aspires to make even
greater contribution to the economic development of Hong Kong and the region.
