cademic and research links with universities and
institutions in Mainland China are central to our
mission and also a key component of our strategic plan.
Our multi-focal presence in Mainland includes:

During the year, the Ministry of Science and Technology
accorded FYTGS the status of International Science and
Technology Base. Our research collaboration with the
Mainland at institutional and school levels covers key
projects including the national “863” and “973” projects.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Wan Gang,
visited the University for the signing of a collaborative
agreement between the Ministry and the Nansha IT Park
to step up collaborative research in Chinese medicine and
other areas.
In December 2008, the university commenced the
construction of the HKUST Shenzhen IER Building for
completion by the end of year 2009. The Shenzhen IER
Base is the only one from Guangdong to be recognized by
the Ministry as a National Hi-tech Innovation Center.
Industrial Partnership
HKUST signed an agreement with Mainland's telecom
network giant Huawei Technologies Company Ltd in April
to operate a joint Innovation Laboratory that will explore
cutting-edge telecom networks and wireless technologies
and other relevant emerging technologies. This is Huawei’s
first R&D laboratory in Hong Kong.
Mainland Student Exchange
Program
The University has established undergraduate student
exchange programs with 11 major Mainland institutions.
The exchange programs have proved to be popular with
both HKUST and Mainland students. In 2008-09, HKUST
sent 60 undergraduate students to the Mainland for a
one-semester exchange and received 26 students from
the Mainland for one semester.

Undergraduates Recruitment
With a growing number of outstanding Mainland
students being recruited over the years, HKUST is regarded
by many Mainlanders as a highly preferred institution for
pursuing higher education. For 2008-09 admission, the
overall intake of quality Mainland students remained high.
Students admitted on the basis of Mainland’s JEE results
all attained scores qualifying for admission to the top
five institutions on the Mainland. At the same time, two
international gold medalists were admitted.
In 2008-09, the University also extended its scope to cover
Taiwan students. Three outstanding Taiwan students were
recruited as a result. The trio were ranked among the
top 4.9% to 0.8% of the 148,000 candidates who took
the public examination General Scholastic Ability Test in
Taiwan last year.
