Partnerships
In 2004-05, HKUST's worldwide reputation
for academic excellence led to strong
research partnerships with leading inter-
national companies and national institu-
tions.
HKUST and NASDAQ-listed biopharmaceu-
tical company Geron Corporation jointly
established a biotechnology company in
Hong Kong to research and develop
drugs to help counter age-related and
neurodegenerative diseases. To this end,
HKUST shall use part of a HK$175 million
donation from The Hong Kong Jockey
Club. The initiative will provide a significant
boost to the local biotechnology sector
and encourage technology transfer in
Hong Kong.
In another major step, HKUST's research
collaboration with Microsoft Research
Asia (MSRA) gained valuable support
from the central government, with the
announcement of the establishment of
the Ministry of Education (MOE)/MSRA
Information Technology Key Laboratory
at HKUST.
The Lab seeks to advance the Chinese IT
industry by conducting joint basic
research projects in computer science,
and training researchers. At HKUST, the
Lab will focus on three main research
areas: vision and graphics, systems and
networking and mass information man-
agement. This is the first MOE Key Lab in
Hong Kong.
