Prof Yum-Tong Siu, Professor of
Mathematics from Harvard University,
gave a lecture at HKUST as part of the
Future Stars in Mathematics Summer
Camp. The camp, sponsored by the
Tianyuan Fund for Mathematics of the
National Natural Science Foundation of
China, was attended by more than 100
senior secondary students from Hong
Kong and the Mainland.

Around 13,000 visitors enjoyed the
University's Student Outreach Day, which
provided the opportunity for prospective
students and secondary school teachers
to learn more about HKUST. A wide range
of activities was organized on campus.
September
Pundits and politicians came together at
HKUST for the Democracy, Nationalism
and Culture Forum, organized by the
Center for Cultural Studies in the School
of Humanities and Social Science. The
speakers included cultural critics Leung
Man Tao and Tao Jie; Shiu Sin Por, execu-
tive director of the One Country Two
Systems Research Institute; and legislator
Leung Kwok-hung.
HKUST played host to the Citigroup
International Case Competition 2004,
which saw 17 teams of high-flying inter-
national business students compete to
provide solutions for a real business case
in the Asian region.
The month brought several mainland del-
egations to campus. The visits were led
by Prof Han Qide, Vice-Chairman, the
Standing Committee of the National
People's Congress and Executive Vice-
President of Peking University; Prof Yu
Daoyin, Vice-President of Tianjin
University; and Yan Xiaopei, Vice-Mayor
of Shenzhen Municipal Government
respectively.

The HKUST Alumni Association celebrated
its 10th anniversary. New alumni groups,
the University Choir Alumni Association,
and the Mechanical Engineering
Graduates' Association, were also estab-
lished over the year.
At the 12th Congregation, 1,818
Bachelor, 870 Master's and 103 doctoral
degrees were conferred. The graduation
event expanded the ranks of HKUST
alumni to over 22,000.
November
The Institute of NanoMaterials and
NanoTechnology hosted its inaugural
Technical Advisory Committee meeting
and distinguished lecture series.
Speakers included Prof Neal Lane of
Rice University, former Science Advisor to
the President of the United States, and
Prof Kikuo Okuyama of Hiroshima
University.
The International Conference on
Developing Digital Institutional Repositories:
Experiences and Challenges brought
local and overseas representatives to
HKUST to share the latest insights on digi-
tal repositories for academic institutions.

2004
The Department of Chemical
Engineering celebrated its 10th anniver-
sary with an international symposium
exploring future developments in chemi-
cal engineering across Asia.
HKUST faculty gave a series of weekly
lectures at the Nanshan Library,
Shenzhen, throughout the month to
strengthen scientific exchange and ties
with the Mainland. Topics included nano-
materials and the difference in US and
Chinese perspectives on achievement.

HKUST signed a collaborative agreement
with the University of Electronic Science
and Technology of China and the
Nanyang Technological University of
Singapore to work together on high-tech
communications research in combined
areas of expertise, such as Beyond Third
Generation (B3G) and Ultra Wideband
(UWB) technologies.
