Community Support
During the year, HKUST received gener-
ous support to fund new initiatives in a
range of areas.
A HK$33 million donation from the Lee
Shau Kee Foundation will be used to
support long-term academic and
research development and assist the
University in making further contributions
to social and economic development.
The University's research facilities were
boosted by the Lo Kwee-Seong Medical
Image Analysis Laboratory, named in
recognition of a donation of HK$1.5 mil-
lion from the K S Lo Foundation. The
Laboratory focuses on interdisciplinary
research that creates and applies engi-
neering techniques to medical image
analysis with the goal of improving
healthcare locally and globally.
The Croucher Laboratory on Multiscale
Modeling and Simulation, which facili-
tates advanced research and develops
high-level computational methods, was
established with a HK$1 million donation
from The Croucher Foundation.
Meanwhile, the Division of Social
Science set up the Center on China's
Transnational Relations with a HK$1 mil-
lion donation from the Chan Tseng-Hsi
Foundation. The Center engages in
research on China-issues that have impli-
cations beyond the country's borders,
and it provides a variety of education
programs including research workshops,
a summer institute, international confer-
ences and public lectures.
To assist internationalization, the
University will establish the HK$8 million
Swire International Young Fellows
Program with the support of the Swire
Group Charitable Trust. This will foster tal-
ented young people with the outlook
and skills to operate successfully within
different countries and cultures by creat-
ing scholarships to enable top overseas
students to study at HKUST. The program
will also support outstanding local stu-
dents through exchange scholarships to
leading overseas institutions.
Over the year, the University allocated
524 scholarships totaling HK$14.76 million.
The expansion of HKUST's facilities, as
called for in the Strategic Plan, got
underway with a ground-breaking cere-
mony in November for The Hong Kong
Jockey Club Enterprise Center. The
Center, which will expand research and
development, is being constructed with
the help of a HK$100 million donation
from The Hong Kong Jockey Club
Charities Trust.
The new Visitor Information Center has
been named the Mr and Mrs Ho Ting Sik
Visitor Information Center in recognition
of the couple's HK$2.5 million donation
to the University.

In 2004-05, HKUST strengthened
local, national and global ties and
gained both community and over-
seas support for its work. This
showed recognition of the valu-
able role the University has to play
in different arenas.
