Dr Cheng Yu Tung officiated at the
groundbreaking ceremony for
the Cheng Yu Tung Building
.
A HK$90 million donation was
made by the Chow Tai Fook Cheng
Yu Tung Foundation in support
of the construction of the eight-
storey, 10,000 sq m research and
academic building, which will feature
multidisciplinary laboratories.
Prof Arup Chakraborty, the Robert T
Haslam Professor of Chemical
Engineering, Chemistry and
Biological Engineering at MIT, gave
a
Distinguished Lecture entitled
“How to Hit HIV Where It Hurts”
at HKUST Institute for Advanced
Study co-sponsored by the Division
of Biomedical Engineering.
Prof Alex Guenther and Prof Louisa
Emmons from the National Center
for Atmospheric Research, US,
spoke at the
Workshop on Air
Quality and Climate at the urban-
rural interface
. They spoke on
quantifying climate change due to
secondary organic aerosol formation
at the urban-rural interface through
land processes and atmospheric
processes respectively.
The
HKUST Public Humanities
Lectures
were co-organized by the
Division of Humanities and Hong
Kong Museum of History.
The innovative annual
Intimacy
of Creativity
program, involving
composers, renowned musicians,
and a series of concerts was held.
It was hosted by the School of
Humanities and Social Science and
led by Prof Bright Sheng.
HKUST and École Nationale
Supérieure des Mines de Saint-
Étienne in France signed a
Memorandum for Cooperation
and an Academic, Scientific and
Cultural Cooperation Agreement
to foster collaboration.
Entrepreneur and artist Mr Nicholas
Tse spoke at the
inaugural Asian
Leadership Series
at HKUST.

Rankings

Ms Marjorie Yang, Chairman of
Esquel Group and one of Fortune’s
Top 50 Most Powerful Women in
Business, appeared at the
UC RUSAL
President’s Forum

The University organized the
second
One Million Dollar
Entrepreneurship Competition
with participation from 89
faculty, staff, students and alumni
teams. The international judging
panel comprised over 50 leading
executives, professional investors and
entrepreneurial academics.

Prof Shu Chien, Director of
the Institute of Engineering in
Medicine, University of California,
San Diego, gave a
Distinguished
Lecture entitled “Perspectives
in Biomedical Engineering”
at
HKUST Institute for Advanced Study
co-sponored by the Division of
Biomedical Engineering.
HKUST signed a
Memorandum
of Understanding with Xian
Jiaotong University
to establish
the XJTU-HKUST Joint School of
Sustainable Development.
Over 100 students, staff and alumni
took part in the
Summer Musical
2012
organized by the Center
for the Arts. The musical was the
award-winning Broadway show
Guys
and Dolls
.
The Division of Life Science held the
2012 Hong Kong Inter-University
Postgraduate Symposium
,
together with the University of Hong
Kong and the Chinese University
of Hong Kong. The joint effort
focused on postgraduate research in
biochemistry, molecular biology, and
other areas of life science.
The University hosted the
2012
Gordon Research Conference
on Molecular and Cellular
Neurobiology
. The conference was
co-organized by the Biotechnology
Research Institute, Division of Life
Science, Molecular Neuroscience
Center and the State Key Laboratory
of Molecular Neuroscience to
promote interactions between US
and Asia-based neuroscientists.
A Conference on Ret/Prospectives
of Hong Kong and Delta Cities
in Global Shadow
was organized
by the Division of Humanities. The
conference featured faculty members
from universities in Hong Kong,
Mainland China and the US.
About
80 members from the
Research Grants Council visited
HKUST
to meet academic staff
and research students and discuss
the University’s research activities,
strategies and major achievements.
