Prof Tai Kai Ng, Department of
Physics, organized the
advanced
Program on Quantum
condensation (Qc11) workshop
for condensed matter theorists to
share their results and insights.
Speakers from the Environmental
Protection Department and
Innovation and Technology
Commission were invited to a
Forum on interdisciplinary
environmental research
to
share their views on innovative
interdisciplinary research related to
environmental sustainability.
A group of HKUST physicists led by
Prof Shengwang Du reported direct
observation of optical precursors
of a single photon and proved
that
single photons cannot
travel faster than the speed
of light in a vacuum
. The study,
which reaffirmed Einstein's theory,
was published in
Physical Review
Letters
, one of the most prestigious
scientific journals in physics.

HKUST’s
first Summer institute
for Secondary School Students
offered 25 credit-bearing courses in
science, engineering, business and
management, humanities and social
science, and attracted more than
670 participants from over 200
local and overseas schools.
HKUST partnered with UCLA to
host Hong Kong's
first research in
industrial Projects for Students
initiative, a summer research
plus industrial internship and
international education exchange
program.
The University hosted a special
visit by the
world's largest solar-
powered catamaran, mS tûranor
PlanetSolar
, to raise environmental
consciousness.

The
HKUSt Shenzhen industry,
education and research Building
was officially opened to provide
15,000 sq m of space for research,
technology transfer and executive
training.
School of Business and
Management BBA in Global
Business students launched a four-
day
global Business conference
,
the School’s first large-scale
international conference led by
undergraduate students. The
closing ceremony was officiated
by Dr William Fung of Li & Fung
Limited.
HKUST presented the
Shaw Prize
lecture in astronomy 2011
.
The lecture was given by
distinguished astronomer and
prize-winner Dr Enrico Costa.
The University joined hands with 21
secondary schools to launch a
pilot
scheme for the first Secondary
Schools-University dual Program
in Hong Kong. The program seeks
to nurture gifted students in science
and mathematics.

Uc rUSal President’s Forum
featured Dr Jim O’Neill, Chairman of
Goldman Sachs Asset Management
and creator of the Brazil, Russia,
India, China acronym BRICs.
The
Bring technology to
community exhibition
was
organized by the School of
Engineering. The display showcased
the work of engineering faculty,
students and alumni. It was held at
the Hong Kong Science Museum.
President Tony F Chan and
Vice-President for Institutional
Advancement Dr Eden Y Woon
visited 10 universities and
two institutions in europe
,
including Oxford, CERN-European
Organization for Nuclear Research
and the World Economic Forum.
