Teaching and Learning
In terms of HKUST students going overseas for research
attachment, a total of 11 senior year PhD students
were supported by the University’s Overseas Research
Awards, each visiting an overseas research laboratory
for up to six months. Hosting institutions included the
Universities of Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon, Michigan,
Northwestern, Toronto, and Yale. The scheme has
enabled the University’s PhD students to work with
foreign researchers and to experience an entirely
different culture.
This year, the Research Grants Council launched the
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme to attract qualified
students from around the world to pursue their PhD
studies in Hong Kong. As of 30 June 2010, 32 out of
106 awardees selected HKUST among local universities
as their first choice to pursue their PhD studies, giving
HKUST the highest share of awardees in Hong Kong.
Taught Postgraduate Programs
In an advanced knowledge-based society like Hong
Kong, the demand for postgraduate education to help
meet the lifelong learning needs of professionals is
constantly on the rise. It is only natural for institutions
of higher learning to provide the main source of formal
training opportunities. The University’s taught masters
programs serve this role very well. In recent years,
enrolment figures have indicated that the demand for
taught masters programs from non-local applicants has
grown, accounting for 35% of the taught postgraduate
student population last year.
During the year, two new programs were approved
— the MSc in Computer Science and Technology and
the MSc in Electronic Technology, both of which are
dual master’s degree programs jointly offered with the
South China University of Technology. In addition, the
International EMBA program has been re-launched as
the HKUST EMBA program.
The year also witnessed a remarkable growth of 28% in
full-time taught postgraduate enrolment, compared with
a modest increase of 7% in the previous year.
Student Life
Students continue to engage actively in out-of-class
learning and enjoy a vibrant student life in a variety of
co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Student development programs launched last year
such as the REDbird Award Program and the Green
Ambassador Program have progressed well and have
been producing encouraging results. New initiatives,
notably the Living Learning Communities and the HKUST
Connect Program, attracted an overwhelming response
from students. Other self-development programs such
as the Library’s Book Talks, Reader’s Alert, Collection
Highlights, and exhibitions have been well received by
students.
Sponsored by the Drs Richard Charles and Esther Yewpick
Lee Charitable Foundation, the REDbird Award Program
is a holistic development program for students aimed at
fostering the attributes of good and respectful citizens.
Some 160 students joined the program as members
and 40 as coaches. Five REDbird Gold Awards and two
Silver Awards were granted to seven REDbird coaches in
recognition of their outstanding achievements.
The HKUST-Hang Seng Bank Green Ambassador Program
continued to generate a good response. Various green
projects were carried out, with the Environment Week
and the Eco-Olympics being the highlights of the year.
The University first launched the Living Learning
Communities (LLC) in the Chan Sui Kau and Chan
Lam Moon Chun Hall in late 2009 to offer diverse
residential life experiences while facilitating learning
and development in a holistic manner. Students are
required to reside in clusters within the student hall to
form small communities based on various interests and
hobbies. These communities are supervised by faculty
and staff members to encourage better interaction and
to help students with their social integration, as well as
intellectual and personal development. More than 300
students were engaged in these residential learning
activities.
