HKUST Annual Report 2009-2010 - page 8-9

Chairman’s Foreword
O
ver the past year, HKUST has undergone a smooth
leadership transition. Prof Tony F Chan, having
taken over the Presidency of this University in September
2009, has led us on our mission to be recognized as a
world class university of science and technology, and
as a driving force in Hong Kong’s transformation into a
knowledge society. We continue to improve our global
position as a leader in our chosen fields of endeavor.
While continuing to hold sway in our joint Executive MBA
program with the Kellogg School of Management at
the Northwestern University as a world leader, our MBA
program also broke into the top-ten ranking this year,
with its research in management and marketing both
occupying the number three spot in the world. Overall,
we are now ranked no. 2 among Asian universities. In
engineering, we are currently the world’s no. 20.
This level of international recognition has also translated
into wider support, here and abroad. I am greatly
cheered by the enormous beneficence of Dr Cheng
Yu Tung who gave us $90 million through his Chow
Tai Fook Cheng Yu Tung Fund. For the first time in the
history of Hong Kong higher education, we have also
attracted substantial financial support from a Russian
global conglomerate, UC RUSAL, which has pledged
funds for student exchanges, research and the staging
of the President’s Forum for which our Institute for
Advanced Study will play host.
The University has also been successful in the recruitment
of the Provost and two Vice-Presidents during the past
year. They are Prof Wei Shyy, who has taken up the
position of Provost on 23 August 2010, Prof Joseph
Lee who has taken up the position of Vice-President for
Research and Graduate Studies on 1 November 2010,
and Dr Eden Woon who has taken up the newly created
position of Vice-President for Institutional Advancement
on 1 November 2010. We are indeed very fortunate
to have persuaded these outstanding talents with
proven track records to join us. Together they will form
a formidable leadership team of the Group of 5 with
our President Prof Tony F Chan and Prof Y S Wong, our
Vice-President for Administration and Business. We look
forward to the promulgation of a new Strategic Vision
for our University from our G5 in due course.
The year under review has also witnessed significant
initiatives from our University Council, which in
September 2009 introduced revisions to the University
Ordinance providing for two members elected
respectively by the staff and the student body, thereby
strengthening its democratic elements in representing
the interests of different stakeholders.
Significantly, under the Council’s guidance, the University’s
consolidated budgets have been brought into alignment
with its strategic areas of operation. The financial
statements were also recast last year to bring greater
clarity to the results of our operations and the state of
our financial position. This has provided the University
management with a holistic picture of the University’s
overall finances, thus facilitating forward planning.
At the same time, a new Council committee for
institutional advancement has been established to boost
the University’s capability to broadcast our vision and
raise our profile locally and internationally. This should
facilitate our outreach and fund raising efforts. The
committee also sets its goal to foster a sense of belonging
amongst its stakeholders, in particular our alumni. In
parallel, members of our senior leadership team have put
forth the 1-HKUST concept to enhance our cohesiveness
as a goal-directed community.
As we gear up for our 20
th
anniversary celebrations, I
wish to take this opportunity to pay my tribute to our
dedicated faculty members and other staff for their
unwavering pursuit of academic and administrative
excellence. It was entirely fitting that in this past year,
we honored our first batch of loyal and long-serving
employees who have remained with the University
through thick and thin for the past 20 years.
Success had made us confident, but it will not make us
complacent, for many challenges loom over the fierce
competition for funds and talent. As our reputation grows,
we are becoming a more sure-footed and formidable
competitor. The price of continued excellence is eternal
vigilance and a strong sense of purpose and mission.
