the Japanese Population
Association’s Best Book in
Population Studies Award,
a biennial prize for the

Faculty members continued to publish in highly
competitive journals in China studies, psychology,
economics, political science and other disciplines, just
to name a few. A number of authored books were also

Innovative education
The School covers the following disciplines: literature,
linguistics, history and anthropology, philosophy and
religion as well as music and art history under the Division
of Humanities; and economics, geography, political
science, psychology, science, technology and society, and
sociology under the Division of Social Science. During the
year under review, the Center for Language Education
(formerly the Language Center) also joined the School.
In Fall 2011, the School inaugurated the BSc in Global
China Studies. This elite program had an initial intake of
40 students and employs a global comparative perspective
to study China, building a unique portfolio of knowledge.
The School of Humanities and Social Science has enjoyed a dynamic year, strengthening its
expertise and receiving worldwide recognition for its achievements. In the 2012
QS Asian
University Rankings
— Asia’s Top 50 Universities in Social Sciences and Management, HKUST
was ranked 10th in Social Sciences and 29th in the World’s Top 100 Asian Universities in
Humanities.
