President’s Report
位於南沙的科大霍英東研究院,獲霍英東博士
生前鼎力支持,現已奠基和運作。作為科大的
第五所學院,霍英東研究院開始邁步發展,
配合國家的政策,為華南地區工商業提供技術
支援,培養所需人才。
面對2012年落實「三三四」學制改革,校園擴
建迫在眉睫。我們必須作好準備,迎接改革後
本科生新增30%的變化。
科大有幸獲李兆基博士慷慨捐贈四億港元,
為我們的擴建計劃提供資金。為答謝李兆基
博士,學術大樓西面新建的校園,將命名為
「李兆基校園」。
「三改四」改革,使學生人數增加,而教師數目
亦需相應增加。為此,我們遠赴美國西部的學
府招賢納士,並取得顯著成果。此外,科大亦
計劃到美國東部名校,會見當地的才俊,物色
名師。科大在國際上的聲譽日隆,是得力於有
一流教研人才,這也是科大發展的力量所在。
在遠赴海外羅致優秀老師的同時,去年亦有數
位同事與科大辭別。學術副校長、工商管理學
院創院院長陳玉樹教授,出任嶺南大學校長。
工商管理學院院長陳家強教授,應邀出任政府
財經事務及庫務局局長。科大人才輩出,可見
一斑。
為提升教學質素,錢大康教授聯同各學院院
長,領導一個「三三四」學制改革委員會,廣
泛聽取意見,務求締造一個優秀的本科教育體
系,使科大的發展可不斷精進。有鑒於不同年
齡的學生需掌握不同技能,因此,跨學科的教

of the university, it has already opened its
door to begin its mission. In going north,
we have answered the call of our nation,
to give technological support to business
enterprises in the region and training the
talents that its needs.
Back on the main campus, expansion has
become a matter of urgent necessity as we
begin preparations for the 3-3-4 reform
due for implementation in 2012. We must
be physically ready to accommodate a
30% increase in undergraduate student
population on our campus.
Again, the university has been most fortunate in finding its enabler
in Dr Lee Shau Kee, whose generous pledge of $400 million
underwrites much of our expansion plans. In gratitude, the new
campus to the west of the main complex will be named the Lee
Shau Kee Campus.
The changeover from a three-year to a four-year undergraduate
education in 2012 would mean not only an increase in student
population, but also a corresponding increase in faculty strength and
research capability. That is why we went on a recruitment drive to
the universities on the West Coast of the United States. The results
of this exercise have been fruitful and encouraging. Another foray to
the American East Coast with its cluster of Ivy League universities is
planned. Our enviable reputation is largely underpinned by a roster
of high-quality faculty members in teaching and research. They are
the intellectual muscle behind our international image.
While we went farther afield in search of new academic talents,
domestically, in the past year, we have celebrated the ascensions
of a few of our own. Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Prof Yuk-
shee Chan, a founding member of our School of Business and
Management, has been called to serve as the President of Lingnan
University. Prof K C Chan, our Dean of Business and Management,
has answered the invitation of the government to serve as its
Secretary of Financial Services and the Treasury. Fortunately, we have
a depth of talent among our ranks.
To enhance the quality of education, Prof Roland Chin and the
Deans have been leading our committee on 3-3-4 reform, collecting
and canvassing the views of our community to help design an
undergraduate education worthy of our academic reputation.
Different age calls for different skills. Increasingly important are
interdisciplinary studies. Undergraduates will be exposed early to
the joys of hands-on research. Generic skills, rather than job-specific
skills, will be inculcated to cope with the kaleidoscopic challenges of
the digital age.
