科大高等研究院由舉世知名的科學家霍金
教授主持揭幕以來，開展順利。來自不同
學科的知名學者群賢畢至，這些學術大師
大幅提升高等研究院的國際形象及地位。
科大的領導層活力充沛，使科大在學術及
發展上一日千里。科大校長朱經武教授深
信以身作則的重要，這位心境永遠年青的
學術領袖，勇於嘗試，新意無窮，他為海
岸海洋實驗室籌款及支持環保教育，特別
接受水肺潛水的嚴格訓練，並作出生平第
一次深海潛水，其熱誠，著實使人欽佩。
除了下海潛水，朱校長與夫人慷慨解囊，
捐贈一百萬港元設立「朱經武教授暨朱陳
璞博士物理學生研究獎」，以嘉許科大物理
學系具科研潛力及濃厚興趣的學生，此舉
再次為我們樹立傑出領導的典範。
本人希望，朱校長勇於嘗試及慷慨捐贈的
行為，會鼓舞所有對科大滿懷信心的人士
仿效。我並不期望每位捐助人均一如朱校
長般，為科大利益而投奔深海，但肯定他
們必然為朱校長的精神所感動。宏偉願景
有賴滿懷大志、胸襟廣寬的人去實現，只
要我們團結一致，無私奉獻，必能創造更
輝煌的學術成就。
At the same time, the Institute for Advanced Study has taken off
smoothly since its hugely successful inauguration by the living legend
and scientific superstar Prof Stephen Hawking. The campus has been
buzzing with a stream of visits by many a distinguished scientist from
across various disciplines. Their star power has raised the Institute’s
international profile and gravitational pull.
At the heart of this beehive of intellectual and developmental activities
is our energetic academic leadership. In Prof Paul Chu, our President, we
have a chief who firmly believes in leading by example. It was a sight to
behold as this young-at-heart academic CEO braved the unknown of the
deep in his maiden dive off our university’s coastal waters to raise funds
for our Coastal Marine Laboratory.
Not content with dipping into the water, he dipped into his own
pocket for yet another cause. A world-class scientist who leads a life of
simplicity, Prof Chu has again set a shining example by setting up with
his wife the “Paul and May Chu Research Awards for Physics Students”
with a $1 million endowment for undergraduate physics students who
show promise of outstanding research ability and interest.
I hope the President’s act of personal bravery and financial generosity
will inspire all those who believe in the university’s mission to do
likewise. While I do not expect every benefactor to undertake acts of
physical adventurism for the benefit of the university, I am sure they will
find the President’s example infectious. Big dreams, after all, require big
believers with big hearts to become a reality. Academic greatness tends
to ride on a sustained show of open-handedness.
