H
KUST is now into its 16th year of being.
When the University was built, ambitions of
greatness and a keen sense of mission were built into
it. Each new generation of its leaders are trustees of
its mission and custodians of its dreams. The burden
of expectation on us is heavy.
Of all local universities, we alone are specifically
entrusted by the laws of Hong Kong with the mission
of assisting in the economic and social development of
our community. As research and study move from the
labs and the library into showrooms and boardrooms,
we need Edisons as much as we need Einsteins.
Our fast-growing partnership with industry calls for
a bigger operational base for applied research and
technology transfer. That is why the opening of The
Hong Kong Jockey Club Enterprise Center, made
possible by a $100 million pledge from The Hong
Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, is such a welcome
addition.
Sixteen years after opening its doors, HKUST is
beginning to show the stretch marks of its organic
growth. For much of that time, growth has been
incremental. But we have now found our powerful
institutional “second wind”, as we begin the task
of taking the university into a new phase of its
development. In doing so, we too are feeling the
fever of the new frontier. We, too, begin to feel like
pioneers.
During the year we marked several milestones with
a series of major projects that would help stake our
claim as a leading center of research and science
education in Asia.
