Chairman’s Foreword
O
ver our first 15 years, HKUST has enjoyed an early but by no
means easy success. Leaping skyward in the global academic
leaderboard, we have become a magnet and nursemaid for
excellence, attracting the best and brightest scholars and scholars-to-
be. At the Council’s invitation, President Paul Chu has agreed to stay
on for another three years to see that the University strides confidently
on to its next phase of development.
As we look forward to the next 15 years, there may be cause for
compliment from others, but no room for complacency among
ourselves. The world’s institutions of higher learning are all jousting
to join or remain in the ranks of the academic aristocracy and
scientific nobility.
The economic prosperity of a society is often powered by its leading
scientists and researchers, as the case of America eloquently
demonstrates. A society that does not value the future of its
universities cannot be said to have a future.
Building something from nothing is an overwhelmingly daunting
undertaking. In pursuing our dream, HKUST has achieved a success
unparalleled in the history of higher education. But continuing to move
upwards is an even greater challenge. Not only must there be no loss
of altitude, it must climb to new heights of greatness.

但纍纍碩果，得來不易。我們如今已
躋身國際優秀學府之列，成為才俊匯
聚之地，吸引了世界頂尖學者及最優秀學生加盟
科大。朱經武校長亦應校董會的邀請，續任三
年，繼續帶領科大再創新高峰。
我們過往所取得的成就，獲得各界讚賞，但面對
未來，我們絕不應絲毫自滿，因為世界各地的高
等學府，都力爭上游，努力不懈，競相攀上學術
及科研的高峯。
經濟進步，往往由優秀的科學家和研究人員推
動，美國的經驗足可佐證。若社會不重視大學的
未來發展，則難有廣闊前景。
科大從零開始，一點一滴積聚、孕育發展，這份
承擔，的確需要極大堅毅。在追求夢想的道路
上，科大在短短十五年間，取得了輝煌成就。然
而，要再攀高峰，挑戰只會有增無減，我們不僅
需要信念，還需要不斷自我突破。
