31 contributions to geotechnical risk assessment and management; and Prof Guillermo Gallego (Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management) shared the 2016 INFORMS Impact Prize. On the business front, Prof James Thong (Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management) received the Association for Information Systems (AIS) Fellow Award for 2016. He was the only recipient from Asia. The Fellow Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Information Systems discipline in research, teaching and service. Among younger faculty, Prof Angela Wu (Biomedical Engineering and Life Science) was named one of the Top 10 Innovators Under 35 in Asia by MIT Technology Review . At HKUST, the Michael G Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching is a University- wide honor given annually to one outstanding academic who sets an inspiring example as an educator. In 2016-17, the medal was presented to Prof Garvin Percy Dias (Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management) for his drive to continuously develop his teaching methodologies, the Information Systems undergraduate degree program, and overall teaching quality of the School of Business and Management during more than 15 years at HKUST. Faculty Development In 2017, the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award, previously known as the Common Core Course Excellence Award, was awarded to Dr Jason Chan (Chemistry) for his course on Chemistry in Everyday Life. Dr Chan uses an engaging combination of demonstrations, experiments, animations and experiential learning to spark students’ interest and connect up chemistry principles and theory to daily activities.
