30 HKUST 2016-2017 Annual Report RESEARCH AND TEACHING EXCELLENCE RECOGNIZED The University’s faculty members gained numerous prestigious honors over the year, highlighting the continuous drive for excellence that characterizes HKUST. In national honors, Prof Peiyuan Qian (Life Science) received a prestigious State Natural Science Award (Second Class) for his discoveries on biofilm’s impact on initial colonization by marine benthos. Prof Guanghao Chen (Civil and Environmental Engineering) was among the inaugural winners of the National Innovation Pioneer Award, a new Mainland China honor established in 2017. Prof Chen was recognized for his international leadership in the field of water management and wastewater treatment technologies and was the only recipient from Hong Kong. Prof Cameron Campbell (Social Science) was made a Changjiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education and appointed a Visiting Distinguished Professor at China Central Normal University under the scheme. IAS Bank of East Asia Prof Ching WTang (Electronic and Computer Engineering, Chemistry, Physics) shared the 2017 IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal, for his pioneering work related to organic light-emitting diodes. He was also elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. In a further IEEE recognition for HKUST, Prof Kei May Lau (Electronic and Computer Engineering) received the Aron Kressel Award from the IEEE Photonics Society. The honor is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to opto- electronic device technology. The impact of HKUST faculty’s international contribution to different areas of engineering was further highlighted by several other awards.
