• HKUST joined edX, a major provider of
Massive Open Online Courses, founded
by Harvard University and MIT.
• A Symposium on Economic Governance
in China and the Developing World was
held as part of the HKUST Institute for
Advanced Study Public Policy Series.
• Business school representatives from
countries and regions in Asia Pacific
attended the Association of Asia-Pacific
Business Schools Academic Conference,
held at HKUST. The theme of the event
was “Building Sustainable Research
Programs in Business Schools”.
• The School of Business and Management
and Saudi Aramco announced the
launch of a new MBA program in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to meet the
need for local managerial and business
leaders to support development of the
region.

• HKUST was ranked No.1 in Asia by the
QS University Rankings: Asia for the third
year running.
• The one-million dollar Ford-HKUST
Conservation and Environmental
Research Grants program was launched
to support School of Engineering taught
postgraduate students in undertaking
conservation science and engineering
research.
• The first biennial Croucher Summer
Course on Climate Change and Marine
Ecosystems brought together around 60
graduate students and young scientists
from Greater China, Asia and North
America to generate new research ideas
through interaction with the world’s
leading scientists.
• The HKUST Institute for Advanced Study
organized an IAS Program on Human
Resources and Economic Development.
• The inaugural HKUST-University of
Virginia Jefferson Global Seminars, co-
sponsored by the School of Humanities
and Social Science and Interdisciplinary
Programs Office, took place.
• HKUST’s annual summer musical
camp continued its successful run of
Broadway musical productions with
Grease
, produced and performed by
HKUST students, staff and alumni.
• World-renowned theoretical physicist
Prof John Ellis, King’s College London
and European Organization for
Nuclear Research (CERN), spoke at
the UC RUSAL President’s Forum.
His focus was basic questions of the
cosmos and pursuit of the Higgs
boson.
• Students, faculty, staff and alumni
took part in a variety of community
service activities for HKUST Connect
– Service Learning Day 2013.
• Prof Nathan Nunn, Professor of
Economics at Harvard University, gave
a lecture on “Culture and the Historical
Process”. The lecture was jointly
organized by the School of Humanities
and Social Science and HKUST Institute
for Advanced Study.
• A delegation from the Shenzhen
Science, Industry, Trade and Information
Technology Commission visited HKUST
for an information session on Shenzhen
government policies on science and
technology development, Shenzhen-
Hong Kong cooperation, and major
funding programs.
• The HKUST Institute for Emerging Market
Studies hosted a forum on “Prospects
for Emerging Markets in the Global
Economy” to launch the Institute.
• The 2013 HKUST One Million Dollar
Entrepreneurship Competition attracted
85 entries from local, Mainland and
international. Judging panels consisted
of over 50 internationally recognized
entrepreneurs.
• The first National Pingtung University
of Science and Technology-HKUST joint
workshop took place in Taiwan. At the
workshop, HKUST faculty members
explored research collaboration and
academic exchange on areas such as
sustainability and green development.
