• President Tony F Chan participated in
the World Economic Forum at Davos,
Switzerland, with global community
and business leaders, engaging in
discussions on the outlook for science
and technology, and emerging trends in
higher education.
MAR
• Prof Benjamin Wah, Chairman of the
Research Grants Council, visited HKUST.
More than 20 senior faculty members
joined the visit and exchanged views on
research policies and directions.
• HKUST School of Engineering and DHL
Express jointly unveiled the innovative
DHL Power Bike, the first electricity-
generating exercise bicycles for logistics
operations use in Hong Kong.
• The HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D
Center at Foshan celebrated its first
anniversary with a forum on “LED
Applications: Environmental Lighting
and Vision Health”.

• The School of Engineering
inaugurated its state-of-the-art
Engineering Commons. An inaugural
Industrial Forum on “Empowering Our
Engineering Talents for Globalized
Technology Industries”was also
featured at the opening ceremony of
the Engineering Commons.
• President Tony F Chan led a University
delegation to Turkey and Israel to
establish connections with top
universities and institutes, and to pave
the way for closer partnerships and
collaborations.
• The HKUST MBA was ranked No.1 in
Asia and No.8 in the world, marking the
fourth consecutive year for the program
among the world’s top 10.
• Long Service Awards were presented
to more than 270 faculty and staff
members in recognition of two decades’
dedicated service and contribution to
HKUST’s achievements.
• A Memorandum of Understanding
was signed at Davos by President Tony
F Chan and University of Oxford Vice-
Chancellor Prof Andrew Hamilton to
jointly establish the Oxford-HKUST
Leadership and Public Policy Series of
executive education.
• The third season of “The Intimacy of
Creativity”music partnership, creating a
dialogue between emerging composers
and established performers, was
presented by HKUST.
• More than 100 financial scholars,
researchers, practitioners and policy-
makers attended the China Securities
Market and Valuation Conference,
organized by HKUST Value Partners
Center for Investing.
FEB
• HKUST held its first inauguration ceremony for its Named Professorship program,
conferring named professorships on 13 outstanding faculty members.
• A remarkable number of four papers from the Department of Electronic and
Computer Engineering were presented at the prestigious IEEE International Solid-State
Circuits Conference ISSCC 2013, in San Francisco, US. The conference is the premier
forum for the presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and systems-on-a-chip.
• The HKUST Institute for Advanced Study organized an IAS Program on Particle Theory.
• The month-long HKUST Arts Festival
2013 featured visual arts displays;
drama, dance and Chinese orchestra
performances; film shows; and talks.
• The University’s annual Environment
Week focused on “Energy and Waste
– Challenges for a Sustainable Planet”,
with activities including green dining,
and talks by environment groups.
