• Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science, and her team and Prof
Kei May Lau, Department of Electronic and Computer
Engineering, and her teamwere awarded RGCTheme-
based Research Scheme grants totalingmore than
$90 million for studies on“StemCell Strategy for Nervous
SystemDisorders”and“Cost-effective and Eco-friendly LED
System-on-a-chip”respectively. Prof Ip and her researchers
also received a National Basic Research Program (973
Program) grant for “Elucidating the Molecular Mechanisms
Underlying the Pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s Disease”. Prof
Benzhong Tang, Department of Chemistry, and his research
teamwere awarded a grant under the 973 Program for “Basic
Scientific Problems of Aggregation-induced Emission”. The
two projects received over RMB30 million each.
• Prof Vincent Lau, Department of Electronic and Computer
Engineering, was awarded a Croucher Senior Research
Fellowship.
• Prof Yung Hou Wong, Division of
Life Science, received the Medal
of Honour from the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region
Government.
• Profs Che Ting
Chan, Ping Sheng
and Zhiyu Yang,
Department of
Physics, shared the
Brillouin Medal
awarded by the
International
Phononics Society.
• Prof Gary Chan, Department
of Computer Science and
Engineering, won a Merit
Award in the research and
development category of the
Asia Pacific ICT Alliance
(APICTA) Awards 2012.
• Prof Melody Chao,
Department of Management,
received the 2013 Early Career
Award from the International
Academy of Intercultural
Research.
• Prof Guanghao Chen, Department of
Civil and Environmental Engineering,
received the Global Honor Award
in the Project Innovation Awards
(PIA), International Water Association
(IWA), Honor Award of PIA in the East
Asia Region, IWA, and Runner-Up
Award in the Sustainability Specialist
Group Prize and the Finalist Award in
the project category in the second
edition of the Smart City Expo World
Congress.
