on group projects during the program. More
activities of this kind are planned.
Student Exchange
Student exchange for one semester or more is a
signature program at HKUST. In the year under
review, the number of exchange-out students
reached 761, representing 36% of graduates with
exchange-out experience in 2012-13.
The program enables students to experience life
in a different cultural and social environment.
International exchange is ranked by alumni as
one of HKUST’s most valuable experiences. It is
the University’s goal for 50% of undergraduates
to have had an exchange-out experience by the
time they graduate.
Leadership and Community Service
The REDbird Award program fosters student
leadership and personal development. In 2012-
13, its 235 members and 14 student leaders
(coaches) participated in 90 service learning
projects. Five students received financial
sponsorship from SAE Magnetics (HK) Ltd’s TDK-
SAE CSR Fund to join overseas service learning
programs and trips, and a total of five REDbird
gold awards, 25 silver awards and 88 bronze
awards were granted.

Theme-based Joint Summer Programs
In 2013, HKUST piloted two theme-based
summer programs with Xi’an Jiaotong University
