Living Smart

Foreword I was delighted when I received a request from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to write a foreword for this book because, over the past couple of years, HKUST had been working closely with The Standard newspaper to bring new insights and fresh thinking to our readers and inspire them to explore the world through the eyes of scientists, engineers, and innovators. Our world is becoming increasingly digital; we can feel it from the way we live, work, and communicate. Unbeknownst to many people, however, there are indeed many different ways we can embrace and use technology to transform the world, making cities smarter and lives easier. This was why Living Smart, a weekly column in our newspaper discussing how humans can live smarter and better at the intersection of technology and humanity by HKUST experts from different areas of specialty, came into being in early September 2018. Trust me, no other university in Hong Kong is in a better position than HKUST, which can come up with new ideas and creative solutions to solve pressing global issues and everyday problems from the science, technology, and innovation points of view. I always read their articles with great delight and was able to know things I had never learned and could never have imagined. This book is a collection of all articles published under the column of the same name, which ran until the end of August 2019 and covered a wide range of topics, including aging, AI ethics, e-sports, pollution-detecting drones, unmanned vehicles,
