Preface Since its founding in 1991, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has been committed to pushing the frontiers of human knowledge and transdisciplinary research that can contribute to the progress of society and the betterment of humanity. Our faculty members, who came from different academic fields, have been living out the University’ s vision and mission and walking the talk by continually exploring new knowledge, and making scientific and technological breakthroughs that can potentially solve many pressing issues facing the world today. Their work has inspired and encouraged many people, including myself, to explore the feasibility of using smart technology and innovation to improve our quality of life in a sustainable way. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank The Standard newspaper for providing us with a platform to share with members of the general public our professional expertise and experience, life-changing research findings, and novel discoveries that offer innovative solutions to the 21-st century challenges most relevant to our everyday lives.
