SHAPING THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION Established in 1991, HKUST is an internationally-minded research university founded on the principle that education, original scholarship, and social impact are intimately linked and best pursued together. Over the past three decades, our creative approach has inspired members of HKUST to foster new knowledge and applications as well as make global breakthroughs in established fields. As the world faces increasingly complex problems, we have sought to cut through disciplinary boundaries and connect up new and emerging domains, nurturing both curiosity-driven and mission-encouraged endeavors to spur greater social, economic, and technological advancement within the Greater Bay Area and far beyond. Our new campus, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)), located in Nansha, Guangzhou, significantly advances these goals, with its dynamic cross-disciplinary academic structure specifically designed to complement the well-established disciplinary foundation at our Clear Water Bay (CWB) campus under the unique Unified HKUST-Complementary Campus framework. This pioneering framework creates synergy between HKUST(GZ) and HKUST’s Schools (Science, Engineering, Business & Management, and Humanities & Social Science) while broadening the Interdisciplinary Programs Office further. Unlike disciplinary-based approaches, the novel structure incorporates four Academic Hubs (Function, Information, Systems, and Society) and 16 cutting-edge Research Thrust Areas that are responsive and adaptive to ever-changing worldwide trends. They include big data, design and thinking, sustainable environmental science, technology and policy, bioscience, intelligent transportation, and fintech. The smart green HKUST(GZ) campus began to take shape after the signing of a tripartite agreement between HKUST, Guangzhou Municipal Government, and Guangzhou University in 2018. Following official approval from the Ministry of Education, the campus will open in September 2022.
