53 International Smart Manufacturing Platform The International Smart Manufacturing Platform (ISMP), a Guangzhou Municipal Government accredited platform for open innovation, supports the vision of Guangzhou to become an international technology innovation hub to promote the upgrade of “Made in China” for developing into a smart country and to attract overseas and domestic manufacturing talents to the area through building a research service and incubator system focused on Internet of Things and new materials. ISMP synergizes cutting-edge university research and industry know-how and contributes to the success of Made in China 2025. Spin-Offs FYTRI successfully spun off three companies during 2016-17, bringing the total number of firms established and active in the past two years to six. THE HKUST SHENZHEN RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND HKUST R AND D CORPORATION (SHENZHEN) LIMITED Government Project Funding SRI has achieved remarkable success in taking on major R&D projects in Mainland China. In 2015-16, a total of 39 government projects were secured, at a total fund amount of over RMB 24 million. As of 31 December 2016, SRI undertook 80 government research projects and the total amount of received funds reached RMB 118 million. Incubation and Start-Ups RDCSZ set up the Blue Bay Incubator in the Industry, Education and Research Complex (IER2) Building in Nanshan, Shenzhen, in late 2016. The program’s goal is to provide a full range of entrepreneurship services to the HKUST community to foster innovation and entrepreneurship. In June 2017, the Blue Bay Incubator became a member of the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub and will establish the venue as an open innovation platform. The Shenzhen regional competition of the HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition also recorded a significant increase in teams taking part. Strengthening Alumni Links To strengthen connections with HKUST Mainland China alumni, SRI co-organized “HKUST SRI and SENG Alumni Day (Shenzhen)” with the School of Engineering in March 2017. The event gathered over 120 cross- disciplined faculty members, students and alumni. The day’s activities included an update on the latest developments at the Institute. HKUST LED-FPD TECHNOLOGY R&D CENTER AT FOSHAN FSC focuses on the development and transference of LED (Light-Emitting Diode) and FPD (Flat Panel Display) technologies for relevant industrial partners in the Guangdong Province. FSC has seven well-equipped high-end labs that have passed the certification of CNAS qualification.
