INSPIRING INNOVATIVE THINKING
THROUGH THE ARTS
Teaching creativity through arts education is a distinctive
feature of the HKUST Common Core. In 2014-15, around
one-quarter of undergraduates enrolled in creative arts
education classes, focused on music, composition, arts
performance, literature or creative writing. In recognition
of such clear interest in the arts, a fundraising initiative
to establish the HKUST SHSS Center for Creative Arts
Education  was approved as part of the University’s 25
th
Anniversary  campaign.
In Fall 2014, the School and the HKUST Jockey Club Institute
for Advanced Study jointly organized an international
workshop on contemporary Chinese literature with Nobel
Laureate in literature Gao Xingjian, Prof Zaifu Liu and
other distinguished scholars.
The internationally acclaimed Intimacy of Creativity
workshop celebrated its Fifth Anniversary Season in 2015,
with renowned guests including Pulitzer Prize-winning
composer Aaron Jay Kernis, and the return of the

2015 was led by Founder and Artistic Director Prof Bright
Sheng, YK Pao Distinguished Visiting Professor of Cultural
Studies and IAS Visiting Fellow, and featured collaboration
with Beijing Modern Music Festival, the pre-eminent new

before class has turned lectures into active task-oriented
learning. Student feedback appeared positive. The
methodology was documented for future reference by faculty
interested in introducing this type of classroom teaching.
