• HKUST held its first Women in
Science and Engineering (WISE)
Summer Camp. The residential
camp for HKDSE Secondary Six
students included workshops
and experiments, lab tours,
and out-of-class activities.
Themes covered neuroscience,
environment, multimedia, and
skin care.
• The Hong Kong Physics
Olympiad team, trained by
HKUST Department of Physics
professors, won two gold, two
silver, and one bronze medal at
the 43rd International Physics
Olympiad in Estonia. The Hong
Kong team also came home
with one silver, two bronze
medals, and three honorable
mentions from the 14th Asian
Physics Olympiad, in Indonesia
in May 2013.
• Prof George Hadjipanayis,
University of Delaware,
Prof Steven DenBaars and
Prof Shuji Nakamura, both
University of California, Santa
Barbara and IAS Visiting
Professors, gave distinguished
lectures at the HKUST Institute
for Advanced Study.
• Division of Humanities
academics held two public
lectures at the Hong Kong
Museum of History. The lecture
series continued throughout
the year under review.
AUG
• The University and Xi’an Jiaotong
University signed an agreement to
establish the XJTU-HKUST Joint School of
Sustainable Development to nurture talent
and research in sustainable development.
• Undergraduates from HKUST and top US
universities completed the Research in
Industrial Projects for Students program,
a nine-week summer course on how
to apply mathematical theories and
computations skills to real-life challenges.
• HKUST co-hosted the Asian Network
for Quality Congress 2012, drawing
400 leading experts. Prof Fugee Tsung,
Department of Industrial Engineering and
Logistics Management, served as co-chair
of the Congress.
• HKUST Business School announced
the launch of a multi-campus, multi-
country pre-experience Master of
Science in International Management, in
collaboration with CEMS, a global alliance
in management education.
• A cooperation agreement was signed
between HKUST spin-off companies
Enzynomics (HK) Limited and Intelgen
(HK) Limited and Guangzhou General
Pharmaceutical Research Institute, part
of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings
Limited, for the development of novel
targeted anticancer drugs and other new
drugs from natural sources.
SEP
• HKUST became the first university in
Greater China to join Coursera, a leading
provider of Massive Open Online Courses,
also known as MOOCs. The University
subsequently launched three successful
courses via the platform to students
around the world.
• The Shaw Prize Lecture in Life Science &
Medicine was held at HKUST. Awardees
Prof Arthur L Horwich and Prof Franz-Ulrich
Hartl spoke on protein folding and the
impact of such research on understanding
of neurodegenerative diseases.
• HKUST was the sole local higher education
institution invited to share sustainability
insights with global thought leaders at
IdeasLab, a presentation and discussion
session of the “Summer Davos”World
Economic Forum Annual Meeting,
convened in Tianjin. President Tony F Chan
and four faculty members represented the
University.
• Dr Ivan Sherstov, Director of Research
at Skolkovo Institute of Science and
Technology in Russia, discussed research
opportunities offered by the Skolkovo
Tech program with members of HKUST.
• Mr Zhang Ruimin, Founder and Chief
Executive Officer of Haier Group, gave
a distinguished lecture on “Successful
Enterprises Move with the Times” at HKUST,
his first public lecture in Hong Kong.
