Research Initiatives
Several donations were received and new
partnerships established to enhance research.
Dr Simon Kwok and Dr Eleanor Kwok gave $5
million to support the development of innovative
bio-devices for treatment of endoluminal
diseases. Tongyi Industrial Group China made
a donation of US$500,000 to the Center for
Electronic Commerce. The Hong Kong Jockey
Club Charities Trust approved a grant in support
of a joint project with the University of Hong
Kong to establish research and development
laboratories for Chinese medicine, with $2.75
million given to HKUST. Next Media Interactive
Limited provided a grant of $1.54 million for
the HKUST-NIE Social Media Laboratory. Ernst
& Young sponsored the establishment of the
Institute for Emerging Market Studies, while Xilinx
Inc supported the founding of the Xilinx-HKUST
Joint Lab for the development of reconfigurable
computing technologies.
Student Activities
Two scholarships were established by Hong Kong Yu’s Charity
Fund Committee through donations from philanthropist
Mr Yu Pang Lin, who gave $3.15 million, and The Lion & Globe
Educational Trust, which donated $2.5 million. Mrs Choi Ma
Oi Kuen gave $1 million to support a Public Service Leaders
program; and The Yeh Family Philanthropy donated
$1 million to fund a new course in Social Entrepreneurship
and Venture Philanthropy.
Further Donations
Following a $3 million donation by Dr Ko Pui-shuen to the
Library’s Special Collections Gallery and University Archives
project, the Library’s Archives and Special Collections Reading
Room was renamed the Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of
Commerce Ko Pui Shuen Gallery.
The University received its first bequest, with US$5 million
given by an anonymous donor to support academic and
research development.
A Naming Ceremony was held for the Chevalier Learning
Commons in honor of a $20 million donation from Dr Chow
Yei Ching.
