              Prof Sir Christopher Pissarides, IAS Helmut & Anna Pao Sohmen Professor-at-Large,
            
            
              was the first Nobel Laureate appointed to the HKUST faculty, joining the Institute
            
            
              in January 2013. Prof Pissarides was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences
            
            
              in 2010 for his “analysis of markets with search frictions”, together with Profs Peter
            
            
              Diamond of MIT and Dale Mortensen of Northwestern University.
            
            
              Prof Ching Tang, hailed as the “Father of OLED” (organic light-emitting diodes),
            
            
              accepted the IAS Bank of East Asia Professor appointment and will join in Fall 2013.
            
            
              OLEDs are applied in an extensive range of display applications, such as mobile
            
            
              phones, digital cameras and large-screen televisions.  The Hong Kong-born and raised
            
            
              scholar is the first Chinese recipient of the prestigious Wolf Prize in Chemistry.
