INCREASED REACH
HKUST encourages new and emerging areas of
excellence that draw on our discipline strengths
and extend the impact of the University’s research.
During 2012-13, two institutes were established
to explore significant areas of development and
address major challenges of the 21st century.
The Energy Institute was formally established
in December 2012 to provide strong leadership
in energy research in Hong Kong, engage in
emerging research, and develop technologies,
policies and educational programs to contribute
to solutions to pressing energy issues. The HKUST

discoveries, while partnerships with business, industry and government boost
the transformation of breakthroughs into novel technologies and solutions
Institute for Emerging Market Studies, launched
in May 2013 and supported by Ernst & Young, will
promote high-quality research and collaboration
on emerging markets. The Institute seeks to
establish the University as a thought leader on
public policy and the business challenges facing
these highly significant markets.
FUNDING SUPPORT
The University provided incentives to support
research excellence and to develop large-scale
interdisciplinary research via a number of internal
