In 2012-13, Hong Kong entered a fresh educational era with the city-wide launch
of the four-year undergraduate degree system. HKUST has viewed this far-reaching
initiative as an opportunity to embrace a life-changing university experience. Such
an experience is not just about academic learning – though this remains at the core –
but also readies students to become contributing, innovative global citizens.
The move marks an exciting step forward in our development. I was therefore
delighted to welcome the double cohort of more than 4,000 first-year undergraduates
to our campus in September 2012, and to witness the smooth transition for both
our final three-year and inaugural four-year degree students. For such a memorable,
positive start, my deepest thanks go to faculty members and staff who worked so
hard over several years to provide the educational, logistical and emotional support
to enable this to happen.
