the French government. Five of our professors in three separate projects have
won the Ministry of Education’s annual Awards for Research Excellence in Natural
Sciences. The State Council has also handed out five coveted State Science and
Technology Awards to our faculty members. Little wonder then that, despite
our modest size, we have attracted more applicants under the Hong Kong PhD
Fellowship Scheme than any other local university.
This year, for higher education, Hong Kong has a clean slate in its top leadership.
Not only do we have a new Chief Executive, we also have a new UGC Chair and
a new Secretary for Education. We welcome the privilege of working with our
leaders to turn Hong Kong into a smart society where talent is the calling card
and where science and technology will be a vital part of the new economy.
