Building up the Research Team,
Facilities and Collaborations
The Nansha team collaborates with the team at Clear
Water Bay to pursue the School's goals in research and
in education. The School’s total staff strength in both
campuses has grown to 130. In addition, some 37
faculty from the Clear Water Bay Campus are involved in
the research and/or education programs of the School.
Together, the School has successfully secured more than
30 grants and projects, including two prestigious 973
research programs, Guangdong-Hong Kong research
programs, and various industrial contracts.
In pursuit of greater research opportunities, the School
added Radio Frequency Technology Applications and
Testing and Ocean Dynamics and Modeling, thereby
deepening at the same time extending the School’s
research scope. It also signed cooperation agreements
with South China University of Technology (SCUT) and
with Xiamen University to set up joint laboratories.
These new initiatives dovetail seamlessly with the
School’s focus in 4 key technology areas — Information
and Communications Technology, Advanced Materials,
Environment and Sustainable Development and
Biomedical and Biotechnology.

Building up an Education Base
On the education front, the School sealed its collaboration
with the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the South
China University of Technology (SCUT), both leading
universities in Guangdong, to offer MSc Programs
in Computer Science and Technology and Electronic
Technology, at the School’s Nansha campus. These
collaborations enable HKUST to extend/spread its scientific
knowledge on the Mainland. Students enrolled in these
programs would benefit from the opportunity of studying
both on the Mainland and in Hong Kong. The programs
are expected to commence in Fall 2010.
