• The University celebrated the official launch of the World
Bachelor in Business, run together with the University of
Southern California in the US and Bocconi University in Italy.
This is the first undergraduate program that enables students
to live and study on three continents and earn degrees from
three universities.
• President Tony F Chan led a HKUST delegation to Germany,
Sweden and Denmark to establish wider global connections for
students and faculty, and further opportunities to enhance the
University’s international education and research endeavors.
• Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program was ranked No.1 in the
Financial Times’
global survey of EMBA programs for the fourth
straight year.
• The HKUST Institute for Advanced Study organized an IAS Program
on Metamaterials, Plasmonics and Transformation Optics, bringing
leading researchers from around the world to HKUST.
• The University co-hosted the launch of the first Roche Young
Scientist Award, an initiative to foster curiosity, creativity and
passion for science among young people in Hong Kong.
• HKUST Information Day saw 35,000 people visit the campus to
learn more about the University’s education, research, facilities
and student life.
• The School of Engineering organized the “What’s Missing
in Engineering Leadership?” international seminar at the
InnoCentre to keep alumni and members of the professional
community up to date on the latest global engineering trends.
• The inaugural season of
HKUST Music Alive! concert
series was launched.
• The Library organized a
solo exhibition by Hong
Kong ceramic artist
Ms Chiu So-lan.

• HKUST held its 20th Congregation, conferring 2,011 bachelor’s
degrees, 1,661 master’s degrees and 169 doctoral degrees.
• The University hosted the 2012 Legacies of Women Forum, a
signature event organized by the Global Summit of Women.
The event was supported by the School of Business and
Management.
• Dr Andy Palmer, an executive vice president of Nissan Motor
Company Ltd, delivered a talk on “Leadership of Innovation”
at HKUST.
• A symposium on “A Story on Schisandra Berry: Past, Present
and Future”was co-organized by the Division of Life Science
and the Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Medicine Research
Center. This symposium was the first of its kind for academic
exchange among Wu Wei Zi researchers.
• The School of Engineering and the Graduate School at
Shenzhen, Tsinghua University (THU), agreed their first joint
MPhil/PhD program, with students spending time at both
institutions during their studies.
• The University hosted the biennial Eighth International Workshop
on Low Energy Electron Microscopy and Photoemission Electron
Microscopy. The workshop is the premier meeting on LEEM/
PEEM for leading scientists around the globe.
• The Second Annual HKUST ECE Shenzhen Industry Day
was held to promote and explore collaboration between
Shenzhen industry and the Department of Electronic and
Computer Engineering.

The 1st HKUST Symposium on Neurodegenerative Disease – Alzheimer’s Disease 2012:
New Advances and New Challenges offered fresh perspectives on this complex human
disease and provided a human context for the latest scientific advances.
Prof Tongyi Zhang, winner of the HKUST School of Engineering Distinguished Research
Excellence Award 2012, gave his keynote lecture on “Fracture and Failure of Smart and
Intelligent Materials of Piezoelectric Ceramics” at the University.
The HKUST Institute for Advanced Study organized an IAS Program on Topological
Materials and Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems.
Faculty and students celebrated coming second out of more than 30 teams from
different parts of the world in the quest to design a space orbit that provided maximum
coverage of the Galilean moons of Jupiter in the Global Trajectory Optimization
Competition.
• The Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and
Entrepreneurship Studies at HKUST and the World Economic
Forum Beijing Representative Office jointly organized the
Sustainability of Chinese Entrepreneurial and Family Businesses
Roundtable, drawing entrepreneurs, business leaders and
academics.
